"Operational Amplifiers and other special devices" is the third volume of this series on "Electricity and Electronics" prepared by engineer Albeiro Patino Builes, which has become a reference work for electronics students in general. The book provides a clear, comprehensive, and easy-to-understand overview of semiconductor devices such as Op Amps, the 555 Timer IC, and the complete range of thyristors. It begins by reviewing the essential characteristics of these types of components and guides the reader step by step, with theory, graphics, basic formulas, from the most elementary fundamentals of the components to the implementation of highly useful circuits that can be designed with them. A large number of solved and proposed exercises will help you, as a student, to delve into and grasp all the knowledge presented in the text. Everything is explained in an enjoyable and didactic manner, so that you can have the necessary foundations to understand and verify the operation of components and circuits.
In electronics, the term "discrete" is used to denote individual elements and circuits made up of individual components such as transistors, diodes, resistors, etc. Generally, a discrete circuit is one whose components have been soldered or connected together in some way. For a long time, these circuits were especially useful. However, in the 1960s, they were largely replaced by integrated circuits (ICs), which eliminated the need for mechanical connection of discrete elements. An integrated circuit is a device that has its own transistors and resistors. These components are not discrete, but rather integrated, meaning they are produced and connected during the manufacturing process, which has made possible the increasingly amazing process of miniaturization.
Currently, a large number of circuits are produced as integrated circuits, which come in several types: monolithic, thin-film, thick-film, and hybrid. The monolithic IC is the most common type of integrated circuit. Commercial models available can be used as amplifiers, voltage regulators, switches, AM receivers, television circuits, and computer circuits. The disadvantage they present is that they are of limited power, usually less than 1W. For higher powers, thin-film and thick-film ICs are available. They are larger than monolithic ones, and passive components such as resistors and capacitors are integrated, but transistors and diodes are connected as discrete components to form a complete circuit. Therefore, these thin-film and thick-film components are a combination of integrated and discrete components. In high power applications, hybrid ICs are used. These combine two or more monolithic ICs into a single circuit or combine monolithic ICs with thin-film and thick-film circuits. They are widely used in applications ranging from 5W to over 50W.
