This book introduces current efficient and secure backscatter networking schemes for RFID. The authors integrate these schemes with a concrete example, namely RFID-based missing item detection. The book presents a large palette of tools indispensable in the RFID-based passive IoT (such as compute complexity analysis, approximate algorithm design, the probabilistic data structure, and the protocol stack in COTS and software-defined RFID tags) and how these tools can be carefully tuned and adapted to be practically applied in RFID systems. The book elaborates the state-of-the-art research bringing the conventional data structure and traffic engineering technology in the core network into the emerging IoT applications of RFID. This does not only boost the performance for RFID systems, but also inspires new research directions. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based backscatter technology boosts battery-free wireless device development and pushes the large-scale deployment of passive Internet of Things (IoT) systems. RFID technology has been paid more ever-increasing attention in a variety of promising applications, such as logistics management, supply chain tracking, environment sensing, gas/liquid leakage monitoring, material identification, health-care monitoring, et al. On account of the ultra-lightweight passive RFID tag and large-scale IoT network deployment, the fundamental problem is to schedule the numerous passive tags to access the network efficiently and ensure the security of data transmission. Driven by these requirements, in this book, we provide a systematic treatment of the theoretical foundations and algorithmic tools necessary in the design and implementation of efficient and secure backscatter networking for RFID applications.
Specifically, focusing on the missing event detection of RFID applications, we deliver a comprehensive treatment on the following problems ranging from theoretically efficient and secure writing scheme and access protocol design to practical system implementation with Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) RFID tags.
