The importance of data analytics is well known, but how can you get end users to engage with analytics and business intelligence (BI) when adoption of new technology can be frustratingly slow or may not happen at all?
Avoid wasting time on dashboards and reports that no one uses with this practical guide to increasing analytics adoption by focusing on people and process, not technology. Pulling together agile, UX and change management principles, Delivering Data Analytics outlines a step-by-step, technology agnostic process designed to shift the organizational data culture and gain buy-in from users and stakeholders at every stage of the project.
The BI developer is tasked with building the interface that the end users will interact with. In a typical software development project, the terms user interface (UI)/user experience (UX) are common. However, in BI, user experience is a rare expertise to be found in a BI developer. Yet we are trusting this role with the skills needed to develop, design, and engage the end user with a compelling user experience of the data.
This book outlines how to succeed and build trust with stakeholders amid the politics, ambiguity and lack of engagement in business. With case studies, templates, checklists and scripts based on the author's considerable experience in analytics and data visualisation, this book covers the full cycle from requirements gathering and data assessment to training and launch. Ensure lasting adoption, trust and, most importantly, actionable business value with this roadmap to creating user-centric analytics projects.
You are likely reading this book because you have struggled with how to increase adoption of data and insights. Indeed, you may have found you have done everything right and yet people are still slow to change their behaviors. The data quality is solid, performance is quick and responsive, and people can access the data when they need it, yet something is missing. There is a gap. The value is not there. The “So what?” is missing. People are just not leveraging data to make decisions. Like many, I stumbled into this problem not really knowing what to do about it early on in my analytics career.
It was my first day on the job, working for the most successful global analytics consulting firm in the world. I was big time. An Irish lad, born and raised in Cork, now standing in one of the tallest buildings in Singapore and gazing across at the Marina Bay Sands. With the opportunity to work with the brightest minds in the industry, I was both excited and incredibly nervous. Being honest, I felt ill-equipped to fill the boots of the senior manager, data visualization role that I had been hired for. With a background in computer science, software development and user interface design, I had little exposure to analytics. My depth of analytics knowledge only extended to Google Analytics at the time. However, the biggest issues I was seeing did not seem to be addressed by technical expertise, or lack thereof in my case. Adoption kept coming up. People were the primary barriers to success, not just data. For the next several years I set about figuring out how to address and support adoption. First, how could I be more successful in driving adoption of reports and dashboards for my clients and then, second, could I teach it to others so they could be successful? Little did I know, but this path would lead me to designing dashboards for Formula 1 teams and high-pressure business environments for the C-suite.
This book is a distillation of that approach. From the years of experience as a consultant, with direct application in the real world, to the countless seminars and workshops where I have taught others how to apply the approach in their own careers, the book covers the wide range of applications and methodologies I have leveraged. To get the most out of the book, I suggest going to its website to access supporting materials and templates that will save you considerable time when implementing the contents within these pages.
