При этом происходили и изменения и в наземной инфраструктуре. Тяжелые и более скоростные самолеты нуждались в более крупных аэродромах с более длинной ВПП. Эти аэродромы требовали для их создания и эксплуатации все больше и больше средств. И наряду с этим, подходящее место для создания большого аэродрома можно было найти не всегда. Поэтому уже с 50-х годов ХХ столетия авиаконструкторы стали серьезно задумываться над улучшениями взлетно-посадочных характеристик самолетов и их невысоких требованиях к аэродромам. Военные по обе стороны «Железного занавеса» тоже стали предъявлять заказы на разработку самолетов с укороченными взлетно-посадочными данными (STOL) и к разработке самолеты вертикального взлета-посадки. Они должны иметь возможность работать с небольших взлетно-посадочных полос и при этом иметь высокую крейсерскую скорость. В частности, такие машины должны были иметь возможность эксплуатироваться на авианосцах. ...

On 10 May 1940 German Fallschirmjäger stormed the Dutch fort of Eben-Emael, south of Maastricht. The highly successful 'stop-gap' M3 medium tank was designed in 1941, and as adequate turret casting facilities were not yet ready, the M3 used an unusual armament configuration patterned after a French tank. British lend-lease demands led to the design of a second turret type with the US version called the Lee and the British version the Grant. It could penetrate Panzer armor, and its explosive firepower was excellent for dealing with German anti-tank guns.
