The popular notion of war is that it is fought en masse by the people of one side versus the other. При этом происходили и изменения и в наземной инфраструктуре. Тяжелые и более скоростные самолеты нуждались в более крупных аэродромах с более длинной ВПП. Эти аэродромы требовали для их создания и эксплуатации все больше и больше средств. И наряду с этим, подходящее место для создания большого аэродрома можно было найти не всегда. Поэтому уже с 50-х годов ХХ столетия авиаконструкторы стали серьезно задумываться над улучшениями взлетно-посадочных характеристик самолетов и их невысоких требованиях к аэродромам. Военные по обе стороны «Железного занавеса» тоже стали предъявлять заказы на разработку самолетов с укороченными взлетно-посадочными данными (STOL) и к разработке самолеты вертикального взлета-посадки. Они должны иметь возможность работать с небольших взлетно-посадочных полос и при этом иметь высокую крейсерскую скорость. В частности, такие машины должны были иметь возможность эксплуатироваться на авианосцах. ...
