The Gloster Javelin was a twin-engined T-tailed delta-wing subsonic night and all-weather interceptor aircraft that served with Britain's Royal Air Force from the mid-1950s and until the late 1960s. The last aircraft design to bear the Gloster name, it was introduced in 1956 after a lengthy development period and received several upgrades during its lifetime to its engines, radar and weapons, including support for the De Havilland Firestreak air-to-air missile. The Javelin was succeeded in the interceptor role by the English Electric Lightning, a supersonic aircraft capable of flying at more than double the Javelin's top speed, which was introduced into the RAF only a few years later. The Javelin served for much of its life alongside the Lightning; the last Javelins were withdrawn from operational service in 1968 following the introduction of successively more capable versions of the Lightning. | |

The Dornier Do 335 Pfeil ("Arrow") was a World War II heavy fighter built by the Dornier company. The two-seater trainer version was also called Ameisenbar ("Aardvark"). The Pfeil's performance was superior to other twin-engine designs due to its unique "push-pull" layout and the much lower drag of its two motors. The Luftwaffe was desperate to get the design into operational use, but delays in engine deliveries meant only a handful were delivered before the war ended. French ace Pierre Clostermann claimed the first Allied combat encounter with a Pfeil in April 1945.Leading a flight of four Hawker Tempests from No. 3 Squadron RAF over northern Germany, he intercepted a lone Do 335 flying at maximum speed at treetop level. Detecting the British aircraft, the German pilot reversed course to evade, knowing it could not outmatch the convoy. However, despite the Tempest's considerable speed, the RAF pilots were unable to catch up or even get into firing position. It was truly one of the quickest planes in the air. The book provides a complete modelling guide with numerous profiles, line drawings and photographs. This book is written entirely in German. | |

The flying boat is a unique form of aircraft, with the ability to operate from sea or river and, in amphibian form, from land too. Over a hundred types of British flying boat and amphibian were built during a forty year period from the days of the pioneer airmen to the advent of the jet engine. Early attempts at flying from water were sometimes fraught, but during the First World War the practical military flying boat was steadily developed, serving with the Royal Naval Air Service as an important component in the campaigns waged against the naval forces of Imperial Germany - particularly her U-Boats. The inter-war period witnessed the growth in prominence of civil flying boats as commercial air routes became established worldwide, notably by Britain's Imperial Airways. Light civilian flying boats were produced for use by private owners and modest operators, while the military flying boats of the RAF were many and varied. Throughout the Second World War the flying boat defended Britain's sea routes around the globe with great success, and British examples were also employed by many of the Allied nations. Yet after the war, the type faded from widespread use and, despite resistance from enthusiasts, by the mid-1950s they had all but disappeared. The British flying boat today evokes and great nostalgia and the few remaining examples are carefully preserved for future generations to share. | |
