This selection of some 200 letters written by a young German school teacher and sergeant in an armoured division provides an unusual and touching view of history from the bottom up. The letters are to Fuchs's parents and young bride, mostly dating from his military training, occupation service in conquered France, and the beginning of the campaign in Russia. The letters are full of patriotism, enthusiasm for the Third Reich, desire to prove oneself in battle, and yearnings for family and home, written by an intelligent but provincial idealist and romantic. On rare occasions ugly comments about Jews, Bolsheviks, and English "dogs" are excessively chauvinistic. Showalter's comments and notes are helpful, connecting Fuchs's situation with larger events. For interested laypersons as well as specialists. | |

The Ling-Temco-Vought A-7 Corsair II is a carrier-based subsonic light attack aircraft design that was introduced to replace the A-4 Skyhawk in US Naval service and based on the successful supersonic F-8 Crusader aircraft produced by Chance Vought. The A-7 was one of the first combat aircraft to feature a head-up display (HUD), doppler-bounded inertial navigation system (INS), and a turbofan engine. It initially entered service with the United States Navy during the Vietnam conflict and was then adopted by the United States Air Force to replace their A-1 Skyraiders that were borrowed from the Navy as well as with the Air National Guard. The A-7 enjoyed the fastest and most trouble-free development period of any American combat aircraft since the second world war. | |

The G series, or "Gustav", was introduced in mid-1942. Its initial variants (G-1 through G-4) differed only in minor details from the Bf 109F, most notably in the more powerful 1475 PS (1,455 HP) DB 605 engine. Odd numbered variants were built as high-altitude fighters with a pressurized cockpit and GM-1 boost, while even numbered variants were non-pressurized, air superiority fighters and fighter-bombers. Long-range photo-reconnaissance variants also existed. The later G series (G-5 through G-14) was produced in a multitude of variants, with uprated armament and provision for a number of kits of pre-packaged, generally factory- installed parts known as Umrüst-Bausätze (usually contracted to Umbau) and adding a "/U" suffix to the aircraft designation when installed. Field kits known as Rüstsätze were also available for the G-series but those did not change the aircraft designation. | |
