Воспоминания последнего протопресвитера военного и морского духовенства отца Георгия Шавельского рассказывают о годах Русской армии. В годы Русско-японской войны о. Георгий находился в рядах действующей армии, сначала полковым священником, затем дивизионным и позже главным священником Маньчжурской армии. Он разделил вся тяготы этой войны с армией, был контужен и награжден орденами Св. Георгия и Св. Владимира с мечами. Назначенный на должность в 1911 г. о. Георгий накануне Первой мировой войны сумел реорганизовать военное духовенство и сблизить его с чинами армии и флота. После начала войны о. Георгий был переведен в Ставку Верховного главнокомандующего.
