In the selection of material for the mathematics course required of all undergraduates at Babson Institute , I have been guided by the desire to choose topics of mathematical substance which have relevance for students whose major will be in one of the management-economics areas. My original selections were presented in a course given three years ago. At the conclusion of this course, I prepared a syllabus which has been used by me and four colleagues during the last two years. Th e topics included in this book, and the manner of presentation of these topics, evolved in major part from our work with the syllabus.
