Written by an author who was at the forefront of developments in multivariable spectral theory during the seventies and the eighties, this book describes the spectral mapping theorem in various settings. In this second edition, the Bluffer's Guide has been revised and expanded, whilst preserving the engaging style of the first. Starting with a summary of the basic algebraic systems – semigroups, rings and linear algebras – the book quickly turns to topological-algebraic systems, including Banach algebras, to set up the basic language of algebra and analysis. Key aspects of spectral theory are covered, in one and several variables. Finally the case of an arbitrary set of variables is discussed. The language of spectral theory may be algebra, but its environment is topological algebra. Topology on the one hand underlies geometry; for us it is more relevant that it also underlies the theory of limits and analysis. | |

This textbook emphasizes connections between theory and application, making physics concepts interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigour inherent in the subject. Frequent, strong examples focus on how to approach a problem, how to work with the equations, and how to check and generalize the result. A capacitor is a device used to store electrical charge and electrical energy. It consists of at least two electrical conductors separated by a distance. (Note that such electrical conductors are sometimes referred to as “electrodes,” but more correctly, they are “capacitor plates.”) The space between capacitors may simply be a vacuum, and, in that case, a capacitor is then known as a “vacuum capacitor.” However, the space is usually filled with an insulating material known as a dielectric. (You will learn more about dielectrics in the sections on dielectrics later in this chapter.) The amount of storage in a capacitor is determined by a property called capacitance, which you will learn more about a bit later in this section. | |
