The Business Intelligence Series has been designed to provide an introductory review of Power Query and Power Pivot in Excel and Power BI for the Desktop: Power BI includes both Query and Pivot but in a different environment. Business Intelligence means any one of a number of things but in the context of this book, Power Query, means getting or importing data from any one or more of a wide variety of sources and processing the data in ways that are either impossible or more difficult using Excel alone.
Power Query is a data connectivity and transformation technology in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and other Microsoft products. It empowers any person to connect to a rich set of external data sources and even local data in a spreadsheet and collect, combine and transform the data by using a simple user interface. Once the data is well prepared, it can be loaded into a report in Excel and Power BI or stored as a table in other products that incorporate it. Then, whenever the data is updated, users can refresh their reports and enjoy automated transformation of their data. With Power Query, you can share and manage queries as well as search data within your organization. Users in the enterprise can find and use these shared queries to use the underlying data in the queries for their data analysis and reporting.
I am using Office 365 Excel throughout this book so please be aware that if you are not using Office 365, your ribbons and dialogue boxes may not be the same as mine. The older your version of Excel, the greater the number of differences you will find.
