In recent years, I've explored how AI tools can enhance my own workflow. While the technology is still evolving, tools such as ChatGPT and Claude have already proven useful for analysing and refining datasets. I've even used it to write snippets or code or identify problems with my own code. Previously, I relied on Python – a coding language – to clean and process data, which could take hours to write and debug. Now, AI not only generates Python code automatically, but also uses advanced algorithms to complete these tasks extremely quickly, saving time and improving the quality of the final output.
There is another powerful use for AI, which I haven't mentioned yet. It's something that I am doing more frequently these days. With the right AI tools, you can extract data points from nearly anything. You can even extract data from pixelated charts that appear to have no available underlying dataset. Advanced algorithms can analyse a chart's structure, interpret its axes and narrative and use mathematical calculations to reconstruct a spreadsheet from the drawn lines or bar heights of a chart. This technology has become so sophisticated that it can replicate almost any dataset. If there's a pixel on the screen, it can be analysed and converted into usable data.
