Providing a succinct overview of Lindenmayer system (L-system) topology optimization, this book focuses on the methods and theory underlying this novel bioinspired approach. Evolutionary algorithms in general are applied to a wide range of application areas from engineering, to art, to biology, to physics, and others. In the field of structural topology optimization, these algorithms have been used to improve the exploration of complex search spaces. Relative to the previous discussion, evolutionary optimization algorithms are biological metaphors that can produce high quality designs by identifying, recombining, and enhancing the best features present in a continuously adapting population of individual designs. Throughout this book, we will only make use of Genetic Algorithms (GAs), taken to be those heuristic approaches that specifically apply the processes of selection, crossover, and mutation to sequential populations of designs such that new, and hopefully improved, generations continue to be generated.
