"Cognitive psychology," "cognitive neuroscience," and "philosophy of mind" are names for three very different scientific fields, but they label aspects of the same scientific goal: to understand the nature of mental phenomena. Today, the three disciplines strongly overlap under the roof of the cognitive sciences. The book's purpose is to present views from the different disciplines on one of the central theories in cognitive science: the theory of mental models.

Название: Child Psychology in Retrospect and Prospect: in Celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the institute of Child Development (Minnesota Symposia on Child Psychology)
Автор: Willard W. Hartup, Richard A. Weinberg
Издательство: Psychology Press
Год: 2002
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 296
Размер: 1 MB
Язык: English

This 32nd volume of the Minnesota Symposium on Child Psychology celebrates the 75th anniversary of the University of Minnesota's Institute of Child Development. All eight essays are devoted to developmental science, its history, and current status. Taken together, the chapters in this book show how the history of science connects past and future, how it gives the individual investigator an identity and sense of purpose, how contemporary studies occur within larger traditions, and how institutions like the Institute of Child Development, constitute cultural traditions of their own. Collectively, these essays show that the past explains a great deal--whether we want to know about the processes through which the child acquires symbolic thought or whether we want to know how and why, during the last century, a few enduring centers were established for the scientific study of children and adolescents. Reading these essays, one obtains a sense of how the past becomes evidence, how it forms models for the way we think, and how intellectual challenges arise.

Название: Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement with Everyday Life (Masterminds Series)
Автор: Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
Издательство: Basic Books
Год: 1998
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 97
Размер: 33 MB
Язык: English

I didn't realize that this wasn't the first of the Flow books when I ordered it. Otherwise I would not have bothered. Csikszentmihalyi's work had been recommended to me by a friend.

I have a feeling I would have gotten much more out of this had I read Flow first. As it was, this felt to me like a patchwork of ideas, anecdotes and research fragments about an idea that the author assumed I already knew at least a little bit about. My fault, not his, probably. Some of it was interesting.

Название: Statistics in Psychology: An Historical Perspective
Автор: Michael Cowles
Издательство: Psychology Press
Год: 2000
Формат: pdf
Страниц: 277
Размер: 14 MB
Язык: English

This book presents an historical overview of the field--from its development to the present--at an accessible mathematical level. This edition features two new chapters--one on factor analysis and the other on the rise of ANOVA usage in psychological research. Written for psychology, as well as other social science students, this book introduces the major personalities and their roles in the development of the field. It provides insight into the disciplines of statistics and experimental design through the examination of the character of its founders and the nature of their views, which were sometimes personal and ideological, rather than objective and scientific. It motivates further study by illustrating the human component of this field, adding dimension to an area that is typically very technical. Intended for advanced undergraduate and/or graduate students in psychology and other social sciences, this book will also be of interest to instructors and/or researchers interested in the origins of this omnipresent discipline.
