Many people are drawn to a physical yoga practice as a way to reduce stress and move more. However, because most of their time is spent at a desk, their bodies are often not prepared to perform many of the traditional physical poses. Additionally, naturally flexible people will be drawn to the practice, because it comes easily to them. However, they frequently lack the stability needed to support their joints in these positions, which makes them vulnerable to pain and repetitive stress injuries. Yoga Deconstructed® offers the experience of yoga with an interdisciplinary approach that integrates other movement modalities and modern movement science. This approach helps students become more well-rounded in their movements, which prepares them for asana and may improve their ability to function in everyday life.
If you are a yoga teacher, this book will give you basic, practical information drawn from exercise science that will help you help your students help themselves: the greatest gift a teacher can impart. If you are a student, especially someone with a history of pain and/or injury, this book will help you become your own teacher, so that even within the context of a group yoga class, you can help yourself to practice in a way that honors where you are on any given day, building trust in your own ability to progress or regress an asana or movement, and honor your unique experience and yoga journey.
This book is structured to show you how I teach my group classes and what the different parts of my classes look like. It also includes science-based information to explain why I structure the classes the way that I do, so you can understand why sequencing movements in this way may be helpful for students who have been injured and completed physical therapy, but are not ready to return to a traditional yoga class. What I’ve observed in my fifteen years of teaching is that many people are not sure where to start when returning to the yoga studio after experiencing pain or an injury. My hope is that this book acts as a guide for you to help your students return to regular exercise or movement, while maintaining your scope of practice as a yoga teacher.
In this book, you will learn somatic sequences, preparatory exercises, and principles of regression and progression to make your classes adaptable and appropriate for this post-rehab segment of the population. While there will never be a one-size-fits-all method for group classes, there are ways to structure your group classes that give people options, choices, and a pathway back to wellness, and this book has been written as a resource to help you guide your students on that path.
