This book is an essential guide to IPv6 network slicing. It covers both the fundamentals and cutting-edge technologies of IPv6 network slicing, and provides insights into future industry developments.
IP network slicing is an architectural innovation that provides multiple dedicated logical networks on a shared physical network. It comprises a complete set of solutions designed to meet the differentiated service requirements of the 5G and cloud era. This book focuses on IP network slicing based on the data plane of IPv6, a second-generation network layer protocol standard designed to address many of the problems encountered with IPv4. The book explores the technical implementation of IPv6 network slicing by introducing its architecture, implementation solutions, resource partitioning technologies, data plane technologies, and control plane technologies. It also explains how to deploy IPv6 network slicing through slice controllers and provides deployment suggestions based on Huawei practices.
The development of 5G gave rise to the emergence of network slicing, which was initially applied to 5G mobile transport networks and then extended to support fixed and enterprise services. Today, it can also be applied to IP metro and backbone networks. Currently, IP network slicing, which plays an important role in supporting the 2B services of carriers, is being widely applied and deployed.
In terms of realizing the IP‑based Service‑Level Agreement (SLA) guarantee, IP network slicing can be considered a significant leap forward. Initially, IP networks used Quality of Service (QoS) technologies such as DiffServ to guarantee service quality on single devices. Later, Traffic Engineering (TE) technologies such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) TE were developed to provide service quality guarantee through TE paths. Now, IP network slicing is introduced to guarantee service quality through network‑wide resource isolation. Moreover, compared with establishing physical private networks, deploying IP network slicing helps to significantly reduce costs.
IPv6 plays a pivotal role in IP network slicing. IP network slicing needs to not only support ordinary topology‑based IP forwarding but also identify resources corresponding to network slices to guarantee service quality. To achieve the latter, resource identifiers need to be introduced in the data plane, raising new requirements for data‑plane encapsulation extensions. Thanks to the IPv6 extension header mechanism — which was defined during the inception of IPv6 and is also more mature than the MPLS extension mechanism — resource identification information can be carried using IPv6 extension headers. This meets the requirements of IP network slicing for the data plane in a much more effective manner. Focusing on key technologies involved in realizing network slicing based on IPv6, this book is titled IPv6 Network Slicing. We believe that network slicing will be a key application of IPv6 and will further promote large‑scale deployment and application of IPv6.
It is a must-read for professional engineers involved in network planning, design, and technology support. Researchers and students in information and communication technology and communication system design will also find it useful.
