Software-defined network (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) are two technology trends that have revolutionized network management, particularly in highly distributed networks that are used in public, private, or hybrid cloud services. SDN and NFV technologies, when combined, simplify the deployment of network resources, lower capital and operating expenses, and offer greater network flexibility. The increasing usage of NFV is one of the primary factors that make SDN adoption attractive. The integration of these two technologies; SDN and NFV, offer a complementary service, with NFV delivering many of the real services controlled in an SDN. While SDN is focused on the control plane, NFV optimizes the actual network services that manage the data flows. Devices such as routers, firewalls, and VPN terminators are replaced with virtual devices that run on commodity hardware in NFV physical networking. This resembles the 'as-a-service' typical model of cloud services in many aspects. These virtual devices can be accessed on-demand by communication, network, or data center providers.
This book provides an overview of the basic concepts of modern networking and the key technologies behind them. This book illustrates the fundamentals and evolution of SDN and how this technology can be utilised to solve traditional networking challenges. In this book, the authors have emphasised the importance of virtualisation and how it forms the basis of SDN and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). Further, detailed descriptions of components of the SDN control plane and application planes have been described in the book, along with a chapter completely dedicated to virtualised services. Moreover, this book illustrates the security issues and challenges related to SDN and NFV. Finally, this book covers various issues and challenges encountered by different platforms, including cloud computing, IoT, and cellular networks to be integrated with SDN and NFV.
This book is designed for readers with an interest in networking and its related concepts, including researchers who are exploring different dimensions associated with virtualisation, developers and professionals who are focusing on developing SDN controllers and applications to provide vendor independent networking services, industrialists who are keen on promoting their SDN/NFV services with more programmable features and flexibility, and faculty members across different universities.
