The rapid progress of space-flight development has resulted in an ever-increasing flow of new ideas, scientific information, and engineering design data. This material is now so extensive that it can no longer be assembled and evaluated by one person. On the other hand, the individual scientist and engineer is overwhelmed by reports, papers, journals, and books which he must read in order to keep up with the state of the art. It is becoming more and more difficult for the engineer and scientist to produce engineering data because of lack of time; this results in decreasing efficiency and increasing costs.
This situation required correction. Therefore, a project was begun which has resulted in a single book, the Handbook of Astronautical Engineering, which attempts to record the present state of the art of space flight. A team of 150 leading specialists from government agencies, industry, and universities and three years of concentrated well-coordinated effort were required to produce the first handbook (on this planet!) summarizing the essential present knowledge in the field of space flight.
It is hoped that this book will permit engineers and scientists to perform their duties more efficiently, and the young engineer to acquire more readily the knowledge necessary for him to make real contributions. Thus, the book will help to advance the state of the art at an even faster rate, and will bring us closer to the final goal: Manned Conquest of Spare.
