This book provides readers with an overview of kinetic energy harvesting systems, their applications, and a detailed discussion of circuit design of variable-capacitance electrostatic harvesters. The authors describe challenges that need to be overcome when designing miniaturized kinetic energy harvesting systems, along with practical design considerations demonstrated through case studies of developing electrostatic energy harvesting systems.

Recent achievements in the integration technologies and implantable medical devices and considerable developments in the IoT have made energy harvesting systems an attractive proposition in many innovative applications. As a result of this trend, the importance of having an in-depth understanding of energy harvesting systems is higher than ever before for engineers and researchers promoting these novel areas. Kinetic energy sources are widely available in our environment as well as in our body. This feature makes energy harvesting from kinetic energy sources a promising powering solution in diverse applications such as sensor network, IoT, and medical applications. This book gives the reader an overview of kinetic energy harvesting systems and their applications and a detailed understanding of variable-capacitance electrostatic harvesters (VCEHs). The content is approached from a theoretical as well as a practical point of view, and general challenges in designing kinetic energy harvesting systems are covered in this book.

Energy harvesting methods are investigated as an alternative or prolonging solution to batteries in many emerging applications. The usage of batteries is undesirable or even impractical in these applications due to the fact that batteries are bulky, are heavy, and have a limited lifetime. VCEHs have a superior performance compared to piezoelectric and electromagnetic harvesters in applications with extremely low form factor or when the kinetic energy source operates at lower frequencies. MEMS compatibility and implementation flexibility are other features of this type of harvesters that make them even more desirable. In this book, analysis techniques and optimization solutions, different circuit structures, and practical considerations are discussed in detail.

The first part of the book presents the fundamentals of energy harvesting systems and variable-capacitance electrostatic harvesters (VCEHs). Switched capacitors and asynchronous VCEHs comprise the second part of the book. This part includes structure-specific analysis and optimization solutions for each of these harvesters. The final part develops an experimental setup and practical point of view in implementing electrostatic harvesters. Inductor-based VCEHs are discussed in this part, and a switching technique for miniaturizing this type of VCEHs is presented.

The book also,

Discusses the subject of Miniaturized Variable-Capacitance Electrostatic Energy Harvesters from both a theoretical and practical/experimental point of view.
Describes detailed circuit designs for developing miniaturized electrostatic harvesters.
Includes a comprehensive comparison framework for evaluating electrostatic harvesters, enabling readers to select which harvesters are best suited for a particular application.
