Design of Smart Manufacturing Systems covers the fundamentals and applications of smart manufacturing or Industry 4.0 system design, along with interesting case studies. Digitization and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) have vastly increased the amount of data available to manufacturing production systems. This book addresses the planning, modeling and experimentation of different decision-making problems as well as the conditions that affect manufacturing. In addition, recent developments in the design of smart manufacturing and its applications are explained, covering the needs of both researchers and practitioners.
The Chapter 1 provides an overview of cloud manufacturing (CMfg) applications with a special focus on the implementation in smart manufacturing networks, where CMfg enables the efficient global connection between distributed manufacturing service customers and providers, yielding benefits in terms of productivity and sustainability. CMfg allows us to provide on-demand manufacturing services to several users via the Internet according to a service-oriented paradigm and offers the possibility to perform large-scale manufacturing collaborations and set up smart manufacturing networks involving distributed enterprises. By sharing real-time information, remote manufacturing facilities can be managed as aggregated CMfg services registered into a cloud platform and can be selected or outsourced on demand. After introducing the CMfg paradigm and applications, the chapter presents the development and implementation of an intelligent cloud manufacturing platform aimed at the dynamic and smart sharing of sheet metal cutting services in a manufacturing network to improve sustainability in terms of resource efficiency.
Software can be analyzed for errors without running it, this is known as static analysis. The dynamic behavior of the software is checked through testing; the tested software is executed, and its behavior is compared with the given requirements. A situation can be classified as incorrect only if the expected correct situation is known. Thus, a failure is a discrepancy between the observed behavior and the expected one. We must differentiate between the occurrence of a failure and its cause. A failure is a consequence of a fault in the software or, as popularly called, a bug. Testing is not debugging; while testing is responsible for detecting failures, debugging deals with locating the bug that caused the failure of the software.
To fully navigate the challenges and opportunities of smart manufacturing systems, contributions are drawn from operations research, information systems, computer science and industrial engineering as well as manufacturing engineering.
