The railway scene in the county of Hampshire was dominated by the lines of the former London & South Western Railway, whose main routes to Portsmouth Southampton and Exeter all passed through the county. The LSWR also operated several secondary routes, such as the line from Alton to Winchester (now partly preserved as the Watercress Line) and branches, such as those to Bordon and Bishop Waltham. Other company's lines also served the county.
