National Identity and Globalization: Youth, State, and Society in Post-Soviet Eurasia English Is globalization in danger of diluting national identities and 'transnationalizing' cultures? How can societies attempt to manage globalization and become developed while maintaining a viable national identity? In a study of three globalizing states and cities in post-Soviet Eurasia - Russia (Astrakhan), Kazakhstan (Almaty), and Azerbaijan (Baku) - Douglas W. Blum provides an empirical examination of national identity formation, exploring how cultures, particularly youth cultures, have been affected by global forces. Blum argues that social discourse regarding youth cultural trends - coupled with official and non-official approaches to youth policy - complement patterns of state-society relations and modes of response to globalization. His findings show that the nations studied have embraced certain aspects of modernity and liberalism, while rejecting others, but have also reasserted the place of national traditions.

Название: Transcultural Bodies: Female Genital Cutting in Global Context Автор: Ylva Hernlund, Ylva Hernlund, Bettina Shell-Duncan Издательство: Rutgers University Press Год: 2007 Формат: pdf Страниц: 387 Размер: 5 MB Язык: English Female ''circumcision'' or, more precisely, female genital cutting (FGC), remains an important cultural practice in many African countries, often serving as a coming-of-age ritual. It is also a practice that has generated international dispute and continues to be at the center of debates over women's rights, the limits of cultural pluralism, the balance of power between local cultures, international human rights, and feminist activism. In our increasingly globalized world, these practices have also begun immigrating to other nations, where transnational complexities vex debates about how to resolve the issue. Bringing together thirteen essays, ''Transcultural Bodies'' provides an ethnographically rich exploration of FGC among African diasporas in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia. The contributors analyze changes in ideologies of gender and sexuality in immigrant communities, the frequent marginalization of African women's voices in debates over FGC, and controversies over legislation restricting the practice in immigrant populations.

After the White House: Former Presidents as Private Citizens English hat do you do with yourself after holding the most powerful office in the world? A relatively young man, Bill Clinton probably has many years to come up with his own answers to this question. After the White House is the first book to take a systematic look at the post-presidential careers of Clinton and his prede-cessors. Thirty-two completed their terms. Four became presidential candidates again (one was even elected), two served in Congress, one accepted election to the Confederate Congress, and one became Chief Justice. Clinton has the unique distinction of his first lady becoming a United States senator. Jefferson created the University of Virginia. Teddy Roosevelt embarked on an African safari upon leaving office. Many remained influential figures; others were ostracized when political rivals succeeded them (like Hoover during FDR's terms). Rich with anecdotes, After the White House provides an entertaining and unique per-spec-tive on the lives of presidents. |

English This book fills a growing gap in the literature on international development by addressing the debates about good governance and institution-building within the context of political development. Political Development returns the key issues of human rights and democratization to the centre of the development debate and offers the reader an alternative to the conventional approach to, and definition of, the idea of вЂ?development’. Discussing political development in its broadest context, it includes chapters on democracy, institution-building, the state, state failure, nation, human rights and political violence. Damien Kingsbury, a leading expert on development and Southeast Asia, argues that вЂ?good governance’, in its common usage, is too narrowly defined and that good governance is not just about ensuring the integrity of a state’s financial arrangements, but that it goes to the core social and political issues of transparency and accountability, implying a range of social structures defined as вЂ?institutions’. Providing new insights into political development, this comprehensive text can be used on advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses in international development, comparative politics, political theory and international relations.

Ending Slavery: How We Free Today's Slaves Автор: Kevin Bales Издательство: University of California Press Год: 2007 Формат: pdf Страниц: 284 Размер: 6 MB Язык: English In his 1999 book, Disposable People, Kevin Bales brought to light the shocking fact of modern slavery and described how, nearly two hundred years after the slave trade was abolished (legal slavery would have to wait another fifty years), global slavery stubbornly persists. In Ending Slavery, Bales again grapples with the struggle to end this ancient evil and presents the ideas and insights that can finally lead to slavery's extinction. Recalling his own involvement in the antislavery movement, he recounts a personal journey in search of the solution and explains how governments and citizens can build a world without slavery.

The American Era: Power and Strategy for the 21st Century English The American Era makes a provocative argument about America's world role. It sets out the case for a grand strategy that recognizes American preponderance as necessary and desirable for coping with the perils of the post-9/11 world. The book argues firstly that, Militant Islamic terrorism and weapons of mass destruction pose a threat which requires us to alter the way we think about the pre-emptive and preventive use of force. Secondly, the UN and other international bodies are incapable of acting on these urgent problems. Thirdly, in an international system with no true central authority other countries will inevitably look for leadership to the US. The book argues that if America does not respond actively to terrorist threats, no one else will take the initiative.

The Rise of the Unelected: Democracy and the New Separation of Powers English Unelected bodies, such as independent central banks, economic regulators, risk managers and auditors have become a worldwide phenomenon. Democracies are increasingly turning to them to demarcate boundaries between the market and the state, to resolve conflicts of interest and to allocate resources, even in sensitive ethical areas such as those involving privacy or biotechnology. This book examines the challenge that unelected bodies present to democracy and argues that, taken together, such bodies should be viewed as a new branch of government with their own sources of legitimacy and held to account through a new separation of powers. Vibert suggests that such bodies help promote a more informed citizenry because they provide a more trustworthy and reliable source of information for decisions. This book will be of interest to specialists and general readers with an interest in modern democracy as well as policy makers, think tanks and journalists.

Genocide and the Global Village English A half-century ago, the international community made a solemn promise to ''never again'' allow genocide to go unchallenged. In the early days of the post-Cold War era, international leaders failed to stop horrific genocides in Bosnia and Rwanda, chiefly because Western leaders lack the ''political will'' to use decisive force. Despite increased attention to war crimes issues, American military policy still gives lowest priority to responding to gross abuses of human rights. In Genocide and the Global Village . Kenneth Campbell explains why the international community fails to prevent, suppress, and punish contemporary genocide. Campbell provides a multi-level analysis of genocide's impact upon world order, and the inter-play of politics and morality in the international community's determination of the appropriate role for military force in halting genocide and securing an emerging global civil society. He recommends practical steps the international community can take to greatly improve its response the next time genocide occurs-a next time that will occur.
